Preventive Services help keep children safe from abuse, neglect and maltreatment and help them remain at home and in their communities. We partner with at-risk families by assisting them to develop the skills to manage crisis and maintain safety and stability by offering a range of clinical and concrete services to help them thrive. Our culturally competent staff addresses the individual needs of the child, each family member residing with the child, and their social economic environment. Families are seen primarily in their homes and communities.
The Family Counselor works with the entire family in General Preventive and Family Treatment and Rehabilitation programs. The Family Counselor makes safety-focused assessments of the child and family, and provides counseling services, develops intervention plans, advocates and refers for concrete services to help stabilize the environment, improve family well-being, and to reduce the future need for child welfare involvement.

KEY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1.Assess and address any safety and risk concerns related to children s health, safety and well-being.
2.Evaluate living conditions of clients through home base contacts.
3.Provide clinically focused counseling to all family members.
4.Identify and provide access to specific concrete services and community resources, when necessary or requested.
5.Collaborate with external resources in the family s ecology e.g. school, medical provider, mental health providers, CPS worker, probation, extended family and community members etc.
6.May conduct specialized groups for children, adolescents, parents, etc
7.Attend conferences at ACS offices and other community based meetings.
8.Complete weekly progress notes in CONNECTIONS and enter data into PROMIS
9.Complete and update timely Family Assessment Service Plan Reports (FASP).
10.Attend weekly supervision and case conference meetings.
11.Carry caseload size as identified by program type.
12.Attend ACS and JB trainings as required.
13.Meet monthly casework contact standard according to program model.
14.Examine the family s values, traditions, and beliefs against child welfare expectations.
15.Facilitate and attend Family Team Conferences (FTCs).
16.Performs outreach to communities and establish linkages with other groups, individuals or organizations which may be helpful to clients.
17.Complete agency internal Incident Reports in Alltrac system.
18.Assess level of interactions of all family members in household including other adults frequenting the home.
19.Make report to State Central Registry when required.
20.Identify and monitor high risk families on caseload who are at high risk of abuse, neglect and further system involvement
EDUCATIONAL / TRAINING REQUIRED
Position Requirements: Master s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling or a related subject area and a current NYS license (or limited permit). Travel in the community and home-based work. Evening hours are required, on occasion.
Preferred Requirements: Bilingual/bicultural. Prior experience working in the child welfare system or with children and families. Ability to work as part of a team.
